St. Lucia Holiday Cottage is situated at St Lucia Estuary, which is a World Heritage Site. St Lucia Estuary is on the main N2 east coast route, 300km north from Durban, or can be reached from Gauteng travelling via Ermelo, Piet Retief and Pongola (approximately 6 hours).
St. Lucia Holiday Cottage is in a quiet garden overlooking the St Lucia Wetlands with a seaview. It is a comfortable family home, with three bedrooms able to sleeps nine people. Two bedrooms are two-bedded, a third bedroom has three beds and there are two beds in an enclosed breezeway. There is a comfortable lounge, separate dining room and fitted kitchen. There are two and a half bathrooms. There is a double garage, and parking available in the garden. There is a TV set and satellite dish, and DStv decoder and will have to pay an additional fee for the DStv decoder to be switched on, otherwise only SABC and eTV is available.
The house is serviced daily by our live-in maid, Thembe.
Bed linen is supplied, but guests are requested to bring their own bath and beach towels.
There are supermarkets in St Lucia village to supply your daily requirements. There are several restaurants and pubs in the main road of St Lucia. A popular establishment located nearby the estuary mouth is the Ski Boat Club, where pool tables are available. You can also view the crocodiles and hippos from this club. The new Ocean Basket Restaurant is to be recommended as are the old favourites such as Key West and St Pizza.
There is good fishing in the estuary and in the sea. It is possible to book deep-sea charters to go deep-sea fishing, ski boating or else hire a lake boat for fishing on the lake. All roads to the Estuary mouth and beaches are tarred.
Excellent opportunities for birding present themselves with various walks in the area. Water Birds, forest birds, Livingstone Louries, Hornbills and Southern Banded Snake Eagles can be seen. Tour operator in the village offer Hippo Tours up the Lake, as well as midnight turtle tours.
The crocodile feeding (Saturdays at 15h00) may be viewed at the Croc Centre, where the local Nile Crocodile as well as endangered crocodiles from other parts of Africa may be viewed.
St Lucia is within half an hours' drive on a tar road to Cape Vidal, where snorkelling may be enjoyed in a protected bay. There are excellent opportunities for game viewing on the road to Vidal. For the keen fisherman, you can fish off the rocks at Vidal, or else ski boating. St Lucia is also within easy drive to Umfolosi and Hluhluwe Game Reserves where the Big Five may be viewed.
